They say that in summer, in warm weather, it is especially important to drink a lot of water – certainly not less than the well-known two liters a day (or even more). But this extremely tenacious myth has no – and never had – any scientific basis. We figure out where this delusion came from and how much water we really need to drink.
The need for water differs and depends on various factors (e.g. energy expenditure, ambient temperature and food composition, the salt content of the food and physical activity). Depending on their age, adolescents and adults should consume between 30 and 40 ml of water per kilogram of body weight per day. So this is how much fluid does the body need.
As a rule for healthy adults: approx. One ml of water per one kcal per day. At 2,500 kcal , that equates to 2.5 liters per day for adults.
Note: According to the Austrian food pyramid at least 1.5 liters of non-alcoholic, low-energy drinks such as water, mineral water, unsweetened fruit or herbal tea or highly diluted fruit and vegetable juices should be consumed daily.
How Many Ounces of Water Should I Drink a Day
- Convert your weight from kilograms to pounds. One pound is equal to 0.5 kilos – so multiply your weight by two.
- Divide the result by 2.2.
- Now multiply the number as follows:
- If you are under 30 years old then the value you multiply by is 40.
- If you are between 30 and 55 years of age, the value you multiply by is 35.
- You are older than 55, then you take the value 30 to multiply.
- Divide that total by 28.3.
- Now multiply the result by 0.03 liters (one American ounce). This gives you your daily required water value in liters.
Importance of Water In Our Lives
Water is a vital thing of our life. It includes lots of minerals that our body needs to live longer. These are sodium, potassium, calcium, magnesium, phosphate. So these very important minerals ara needed by our body secondly after oxygen. Because latge amount of part of our body is made up by water. %83 of our blood, %22 of our bones, %75 of our brain and muscles are water. So think about how much water should you drink a day?
Producing perspiration, spittle, urine and throwing away unnecessary things from our body, digesting foods are possible by water. For our eye health and our body’s temprature, we have to drink water. We should be accustomed to drink water daily for our health.
Being Thirsty And Not Drinking Water Causes Ilnesses
You should pay attantion that being thirsty and not drinking water for a long time causes illnesses. Like our body, also world includes huge amount of water in it. Teorically %70 amount of the world is water. Eventhough this is very important amount of water, only %0,3 of it drinkable and usable. Each country has their own plan, vision and systems to make water clean and drinkable.
When buying water from a market, we should check its pH value on its label. The value must be between 7,5 and 8,5 for our health. If the weather is too hot, our body starts to lose water by producing perspiration. So we should drink water more in hot weather. In addition, while doing sport we have to drink more than it used to.
We can say if you don’t drink enough water, you will be thirsty and symptoms of being thirsty are headache, fatugue, constipation. If you don’t drink it for a long time, you may be sick badly. Instead of drinking water, you can supply this from milk, tea, fruit juice and drinks without alcohol. However these will not be usefull as water.
Drink Before Being Thirsty
You should drink water before being thirsty. Because our bodies will not feel itself if it is thirsty or not until it takes water. So we should take water before we become thirsty. For example drinking it 30 minutes ago before breakfast, is very usefull. You can also heat the water just a little bit before drinking.
Old people and our children can feel being thirsty harder. They are less sensitive about feeling thirsty. So we have to remind them. Especially our children, while they are not playing game, they are not drinking water. Our necessity of drinking will be change by climate, age, foods we eat, physical activities we do. So we need to know our body when it will need drinkink.
